How to Measure — Flat Sheets

Measure the mattress width, length and depth, decide whether you want a relaxed drop or tucked finish, then compare those measurements with the actual flat-sheet dimensions.

Measure the mattress width and length

Remove all loose bedding and measure the mattress itself rather than the bed frame.
Measure the width from side to side.
Measure the length from head to foot.

Check the mattress depth

Measure from the top of the mattress to the bottom edge.
Measure at the deepest point.
Include a mattress topper if one is normally used.

Choose a relaxed or tucked finish

For a relaxed finish, allow an even drop on both sides.
For a tucked finish, allow extra fabric beneath the mattress.
Leave enough length at the foot for a secure tuck.

Match the flat-sheet size

Compare the mattress width and length with the actual flat-sheet dimensions.
Allow extra width for the drop or tuck on both sides.
Choose a larger size if you want more fabric at the sides.
