Fitted Sheet Depth Guide: 30cm vs 35cm vs 40cm

Nothing makes a bed look untidy faster than a fitted sheet that doesn’t fit properly. In hospitality, that’s not just a styling issue — it becomes a housekeeping headache, a guest comfort problem, and a faster-wear problem too.
At Linen and Co, we manufacture fitted sheets to suit real hospitality beds (including extra depth and extra length), so here’s a simple guide to choosing the right depth: 30cm vs 35cm vs 40cm.

Step 1: Understand what “depth” actually means

Fitted sheet depth refers to the drop of the sheet’s side wall — basically how far it needs to wrap down the mattress to sit securely underneath.
Depth is influenced by:
  • Mattress thickness
  • Mattress toppers
  • Mattress protectors (especially quilted styles)
  • Pillow-top or luxury mattresses (common in boutique hotels)
If you’re using a topper or thick protector, your “mattress height” is almost always more than you think.

30cm Depth: Best for standard hospitality mattresses

Choose 30cm if you have:
  • Standard mattresses (no pillow-top)
  • A thin protector
  • No topper, or a very slim topper
This is the most common depth for many guesthouses and high-turnover properties where beds are kept simple and practical.

35cm Depth: The safe “hospitality upgrade”

Choose 35cm if you have:
  • A slightly thicker mattress
  • A quilted protector
  • A medium topper
  • Beds that are frequently remade (and you want fewer sheets popping off corners)
In hospitality, 35cm is often the sweet spot: it gives you a neater finish and fewer housekeeping complaints.

40cm Depth: For luxury mattresses, toppers, and pillow-tops

Choose 40cm if you have:
  • Pillow-top mattresses
  • Thick toppers (including memory foam or latex)
  • Layered bedding setups (protector + topper + protector, etc.)
  • Premium suites where the bed needs to look “perfect” at all times
This depth is ideal for boutique lodges and luxury hotels where the bed is a feature, not just a necessity.

A quick hospitality note: corner elastic matters

Our fitted sheets use four-corner elastic (not full perimeter), which is a hospitality favourite because:
  • It’s easier to iron and fold
  • It reduces twisting and bunching
  • It still gives a secure fit when the depth is correct

The simplest way to get it right

If you’re unsure, measure the full height of your bed setup:
  1. Mattress height
  2. topper height (if used)
  3. protector thickness
  4. Then choose the next depth up if you’re between sizes.
