Pillow Care Guide

Pillows Microfibre Duck Feather Goose Feather & Down

Professional Care Instructions for Microfibre, Goose Down & Duck Feather Pillows

Overview

Proper pillow care helps extend product lifespan, maintain loft and support, preserve comfort, and ensure a consistently better sleep experience. Different fill types require different care methods.

Always use a pillowcase or pillow protector to reduce direct soiling and minimise washing frequency.

Pillows should also be fluffed and rotated regularly to encourage even wear.

Luxury Microfibre Pillows

  • Machine wash on a gentle cycle at 40°C

Microfibre pillows are the most practical to care for and are well suited to frequent laundering.

  • Machine wash on a gentle cycle at 40°C
  • Use a mild, pH-neutral detergent — avoid bleach and fabric softener
  • Wash two pillows at a time to balance the load
  • Rinse thoroughly to remove all detergent residue — residue causes clumping
  • Tumble dry on low heat until completely dry — a damp pillow will develop odour and mildew
  • Add two clean tennis balls or dryer balls to restore loft during drying
  • Fluff and reshape by hand after drying
  • Wash every 3–6 months, or more frequently in high-use settings
  • Do not dry clean — the chemicals can damage the microfibre fill

Hungarian Goose Down Pillows

  • Machine wash on a gentle cycle using cool to warm water (30°C to 40°C).
  • Use a mild liquid detergent suitable for natural fibres.
  • Do not overload the washing machine. Cotton-filled inners are heavier when wet and need adequate space.
  • Do not use fabric softener. It may coat the cotton fill and reduce breathability.
  • Do not use chlorine bleach. Use a mild oxygen-based alternative only if necessary.
  • Tumble dry on a low heat setting. Cotton fill takes longer to dry than synthetic alternatives.
  • Add clean dryer balls to help prevent the fill from clumping during drying.
  • Ensure the inner is fully dry throughout before use or storage. Cotton retains moisture more than synthetic fills, so extra drying time may be needed.
  • Shake and fluff after drying to help redistribute the fill evenly.
  • Air out regularly in a well-ventilated space to maintain freshness and reduce moisture build-up.

Goose Feather and Down Duvet Inners

Goose down is a premium natural fill that requires careful handling to maintain its exceptional loft and insulating properties.

  • Professional cleaning is strongly recommended — use a specialist experienced with natural down products
  • Request a gentle, water-based cleaning process — avoid harsh chemical dry cleaning solvents
  • Professional cleaning is recommended once every 12–18 months
  • If washing at home, use a front-loading machine only on a gentle cycle at 30°C with a small amount of mild, down-specific detergent
  • Do not use bleach, fabric softener, or optical brighteners
  • Run an extra rinse cycle to ensure all detergent is fully removed
  • Tumble dry on the lowest heat setting — drying can take 2–4 hours or longer
  • Add two clean tennis balls or dryer balls to break up clumps — remove and fluff by hand every 30–45 minutes
  • The pillow must be completely dry throughout before use or storage — residual moisture causes mould and odour
  • For minor marks, spot clean only — blot with a clean cloth, dab gently with mild detergent and cool water, air dry completely
  • Do not soak, compress, or vacuum-pack goose down pillows

Duck Feather Pillows

Duck feather pillows provide firm, natural support and require similar care to goose down.

  • Professional cleaning is recommended — follow the same guidelines as goose down
  • If washing at home, use a front-loading machine only, gentle cycle at 30°C, with mild down-specific detergent
  • Do not use bleach, fabric softener, or harsh detergents
  • Tumble dry on the lowest heat setting with dryer balls — ensure the pillow is completely dry before use
  • Duck feather pillows may have a slight natural odour when new — this dissipates with airing and is not a defect
  • Always use a pillow protector to minimise direct soiling

Fluffing and Maintenance Between Washes

Regular maintenance between washes keeps pillows fresh, supportive, and hygienic for longer.

  • Fluff pillows daily — grab both ends and push together, then pull apart to redistribute the fill
  • Air pillows regularly — place in a well-ventilated area or in indirect sunlight for 1–2 hours
  • Rotate and flip pillows weekly to promote even wear and prevent flat spots
  • Always use a pillow protector underneath the pillowcase — this is the single most effective way to extend pillow life
  • Replace pillow protectors every 6–12 months or sooner if stained or damaged

Storage & Maintenance

Good storage practices help protect pillow fill and extend usable life.

  • Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight and moisture
  • Ensure pillows are completely dry before storing — damp storage causes mildew and permanent odour
  • Use breathable cotton or linen storage bags — do not store in plastic bags or airtight containers
  • Do not compress or vacuum-pack — this damages fill, especially down and feather clusters
  • Store flat where possible to maintain shape and loft

Warranty & Liability

This care guide forms part of the product warranty conditions. Improper care, including the use of bleach, fabric softeners, excessive heat, or unsuitable cleaning methods, may void warranty coverage. Linen and Co is not liable for damage caused by failure to follow these care instructions or by normal wear and tear.

  • Warranty is valid only when care instructions are followed as specified
  • Damage resulting from incorrect washing, high-heat drying, chemical dry cleaning (where not recommended), or compression storage is not covered
  • Natural settling of fill over time is expected and is not considered a manufacturing defect
