Bath Towels & Bath Mats Care Guide

Bath Towels & Bath Mats Care Guide

Bath Towels Bath Mats 100% Cotton Hospitality Home

Essential care guidance to maintain softness, absorbency, and long-lasting quality for all bath towels and bath mats.

Overview

Proper laundering is essential to maintain towel quality, softness, absorbency, and longevity.

Whether used in hospitality or residential settings, following the correct care routine will help preserve the look, feel, and performance of your bath towels and bath mats over time.

Overloading the washing machine is the primary cause of edge damage, fraying, and premature wear.

Do Not Overload the Washing Machine

  • Overloading is the single biggest cause of towel damage, including fraying edges, pulled loops, and uneven washing.
  • Towels need space to move freely in the drum for proper rinsing and cleaning.
  • A good rule: fill the drum to no more than three-quarters capacity.
  • Washing fewer towels per load results in better cleaning, softer results, and longer product life.
  • This applies equally to domestic and commercial laundering.

Washing Instructions

  • Machine wash before first use to remove any finishing residue and improve absorbency.
  • Wash towels separately from clothing, bedding, and items with zips, hooks, or rough trims.
  • Use warm water (40°C to 60°C) depending on the towel weight and level of soiling.
  • Use a mild liquid detergent. Avoid powder detergents that may not dissolve fully and leave residue in the loops.
  • Do not use fabric softener. Fabric softener coats the fibres and reduces absorbency over time.
  • If softness is desired, add half a cup of white vinegar to the rinse cycle occasionally. This helps soften fibres naturally without coating them.
  • Wash whites and colours separately to prevent colour transfer.
  • For hospitality use, sort towels by weight and colour before washing.

Drying Instructions

  • Tumble dry on a low to medium heat setting for the softest result.
  • Remove promptly once dry to prevent over-drying and stiffness.
  • Do not overdry. Excessive heat weakens cotton fibres and may cause towels to feel rough.
  • Line drying is suitable but may result in a slightly firmer feel. A short tumble dry after line drying can help restore softness.
  • Shake out towels before drying to help fluff the loops and promote even drying.
  • Ensure towels are fully dry before folding and storing.

Stain Removal

  • Treat stains as soon as possible for the best result.
  • Blot spills gently with a clean cloth. Do not rub, as this may push the stain deeper into the loops.
  • Use a mild stain remover suitable for cotton terry fabrics.
  • Test any stain treatment on a hidden area first.
  • Avoid harsh solvents, chlorine bleach, or aggressive chemical spot cleaners.
  • If whitening is needed for white towels, use a non-chlorine, oxygen-based bleach only.
  • Wash the towel after stain treatment to remove any residue.

Storage & Maintenance

  • Store towels in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Ensure all towels are completely dry before folding and storing.
  • Avoid storing in sealed plastic containers or bags where moisture may become trapped.
  • Fold neatly or roll to maintain shape and reduce creasing.
  • Keep away from prolonged direct sunlight to help preserve colour.
  • Rotate towel stock regularly to promote even wear across the set.

Commercial Laundering Best Practices

  • Sort towels by weight, colour, and soil level before washing.
  • Use commercial-grade mild detergents formulated for cotton terry.
  • Do not use fabric softener in commercial laundering. It reduces absorbency and builds up over repeated washes.
  • Wash at 40°C to 60°C depending on the towel type and hygiene requirements.
  • Do not overload commercial machines. Towels need adequate space for proper agitation and rinsing.
  • Tumble dry on low to medium heat. Remove promptly to prevent over-drying.
  • Inspect towels regularly for signs of wear, fraying, or thinning, and rotate stock accordingly.
  • Establish a consistent laundering schedule to maintain hygiene standards and extend towel lifespan.

Extending Towel Lifespan

  • Avoid fabric softener — it is the most common cause of reduced absorbency.
  • Do not overload the washing machine — this is the most common cause of physical damage.
  • Wash towels separately from items with zips, hooks, or abrasive surfaces.
  • Use mild detergents and avoid harsh chemicals or chlorine bleach.
  • Tumble dry on low to medium heat rather than high heat.
  • Rotate your towel stock evenly to avoid overusing the same towels.
  • Replace towels when they begin to thin, lose absorbency, or show visible signs of wear.
  • A well-cared-for quality cotton towel can last several years in both residential and hospitality use.
