Hospitality Linen Buying Guide: What to Look for and Why
As the owner of a hospitality establishment, your brand is built on the quality of experience you offer guests — from the first impression of the room to the feel of the linen they sleep in. Choosing the right linen is not just a procurement decision; it's a guest experience decision.
Here's a practical guide to help you select quality linen for your property.
Start with your bed sizes and measurements
Before ordering anything, measure every bed in your property — width, length, and mattress depth. Many establishments skip this step and end up with fitted sheets that don't fit, or duvet covers that look sloppy. Single beds are a versatile option as they can be used individually or converted to a King with a mattress converter on request.
Choose the right fabric and thread count
For hospitality use, opt for fabrics that balance comfort with durability. A thread count of at least 200 is recommended. Your main options are:
- Polycotton Percale 200TC — durable, quick-drying, wrinkle-resistant and practical for high-turnover operations
- Cotton Percale 200TC — crisp, breathable and comfortable, a strong balance of guest comfort and durability
Go white — always
White linen is the industry standard for good reason. It creates a crisp, fresh, and welcoming feel, photographs well, and eliminates the risk of colour fading over time. Browse our White Bed Linen range for hospitality-grade options.
Protect your investment with mattress and pillow protectors
Always use Wetsafe mattress and pillow protectors on every bed. They protect against spills and staining, extend the life of your mattresses and pillows significantly, and are essential for any graded property.
Get your fitted sheet depth right
Mattress depth is one of the most overlooked measurements in linen procurement. We recommend XD (Extra Deep) fitted sheets as a default — they accommodate most mattress depths from 30 cm to 40 cm without popping off corners during the night.
Size up on duvet covers
Always select a duvet cover one size larger than the bed for better drape and a more luxurious finish. Note that ¾ beds can be tricky — a standard double duvet may be too large, but we offer a ¾ Extra size that's ideal for full side coverage.
Invest in quality duvet inners and pillows
Don't cut corners here — guests notice. Invest in the best duvet inners and pillows your budget allows. Synthetic hollow fibre fill is preferable for hospitality use as it's hypoallergenic — many guests are allergic to feather fill.
Don't forget flat sheets
Flat sheets are a requirement for any graded establishment as per the Tourism Grading Council of South Africa. Include one per bed as standard.
Keep it coordinated
Consistency across rooms builds a professional, polished impression. Stick to white, neutral, or mid-tone colours throughout your property to maintain a harmonious look that photographs well and ages gracefully.
