What TGCSA Star Grading Means for Your Linen Standards

The Tourism Grading Council of South Africa (TGCSA) uses a star rating system to classify accommodation properties based on the quality of facilities, service, and presentation. For hospitality operators, your star grading directly determines the linen and bedding standards your property is expected to meet.

This guide explains what each star level means from a linen perspective — helping you understand where your property sits and what's required to maintain or improve your grading. For a full product checklist by star level, see our Linen Products Required Per Star Grading guide.

1-Star: Clean, Functional Basics

1-star properties are assessed on cleanliness and basic comfort. Linen must be clean, in good condition, and regularly replaced. Fabric quality is not a primary criterion at this level, but presentation and hygiene are non-negotiable. Simple, durable polycotton blends are appropriate.

2-Star: Introducing Protective Bedding

At 2-star level, mattress and pillow protectors become a requirement — reflecting the TGCSA's emphasis on hygiene standards as properties move up the grading scale. Linen quality steps up to polycotton or cotton blend fabrics, and curtains should provide adequate light control and a tidy appearance.

3-Star: Quality Fabrics as Standard

3-star properties are expected to provide 100% cotton or high-quality blended fabrics throughout. Towels should be soft and absorbent, and curtains should be properly tailored with improved fabrics that contribute to the room's overall aesthetic. At this level, presentation consistency across all rooms becomes important.

4-Star: Premium Percale and Coordinated Presentation

4-star properties introduce duvets as standard, with premium cotton percale or sateen as the minimum fabric expectation for bed linen. Towels should be plush and coordinated, and curtains are expected to be elegant — often custom or designer fabrics. At this level, the overall linen presentation contributes directly to the guest experience and review scores.

5-Star: Luxury Presentation Throughout

5-star properties are expected to deliver a luxury sleep experience with no compromise. Premium long-staple cotton percale or fine linen blends are the standard for bed linen. Towels must be thick, highly absorbent, and replaced frequently. Window treatments are typically layered — blackout and sheer — and custom-designed to complement the room's aesthetic. Hypoallergenic bedding options are expected as standard.

Maintaining Your Grading

TGCSA assessors evaluate linen condition, cleanliness, and presentation during grading visits. Properties that invest in quality linen from the outset — and replace it consistently — are better positioned to maintain and improve their star rating over time.

As a hospitality linen supplier working with properties across South Africa, we help operators at every star level stock correctly, reorder consistently, and present their rooms to the standard their grading demands.
